John is the founder and director of Unity Woods Yoga Center, the largest Iyengar Yoga center in the U.S. He has been teaching in the Washington metro area since 1973. A longtime student of B.K.S. Iyengar, John is one of the few teachers in America to hold an Advanced teaching certificate from Mr. Iyengar.
Over the years, John has written for and been featured in a variety publications – Yoga Journal, The Washington Post, Washingtonian Magazine, US News & World Report, to name a few – and spoken about yoga at such diverse venues as the Smithsonian Institute, the National Institutes of Health, NPR, and numerous yoga conferences.
John’s clear, precise style and his engaging sense of humor have created an international demand for his teaching. Although photos of his asanas have appeared in magazines, books, and calendars, and he has given yoga demonstrations across the country, John’s teaching goes beyond the mere physical performance of the postures. He skillfully weaves into the fabric of his classes his deep understanding of yoga philosophy and the knowledge derived from his many years of immersion in the study and practice of yoga. In this way, John’s teaching can guide you to experience the fullness of yoga and to see how yoga can awaken, inform, and lead you toward a deeper appreciation of not just your body, but every aspect of your life.
